Digital Manipulation in Editorial photography

In 1917 the photographic combinations of different images were created by commercial photographic studios to bring family members  together into one picture in reality not together for portrait shoots. there is three people on the left in the image appear to be floating in mid air because apparently cut out of other photos and pasted on top of a photo of the women at the right and re-photographed in a composite image.

Photographers correcting, manipulate and enhance in photoshop, they must deal with questions of both ethics and aesthetics. Ethics define on what we think is good and bad and conforming to accepted professional standards of conduct. Aesthetics is to deal with the nature of beauty, art and taste and things that are pleasing in appearance. Digital processing there's hardly a limit to what can be done to the image which are done with the best intentions.

Changes can be made to images that are unnoticable, so that there is now a discussion that photographs will no longer be allowed as evidence in courts of law.

viewers now they know that anything can be done to an image as films has played dinosaurs and aliens look real. Movies cause problems because viewers expect to be fooled in the cinema and tend to  get upset when fooled in an supposedly  truthful factual medium such as the news.

Purposes and intentions

Questions photographer should think when manipulate an image are, why are we doing this, what are our purposes and intentions? where do we draw the line? what is ethical in the digital manipulation and enhancement of a photo?

The simpleness in manipulating digital images with Photoshop, some people are questioning whether images are real or art and unsure to believe in anything they see.

Editing and enhancing images is important because of photographers motivation. why are we doing these things? are we doing them to deceive people? Photographer are doing it to make the subject more interesting and making it a better picture. Just like a writer enhances factual stories with metaphor and adjectives, photograaphers can enhance their images with photoshop techniques and tools such as contrast and colour enhancement.

Group Crit 2

On Thursday 16th October I have shown my sketch ideas and Tim walker research as they relate to my sketches on using the woods materials to the class but not every student seen them as tutor put as all into communicating with a partner to give feed back by saying what they see in image and what the photographer intentions are and what understanding they getting by looking at the images.

I didn't have any images to show as my sister was ill during the weekend and couldn't experiment more on the day dreaming fantasy and following through the phrase 'books can take you anywhere' but thought what about i have a go in the studio and slip away from the fantasy and make my image more reality and meaningful to others and not do too much ideas based around the woods because could become boring and coming to a stage where am like ' done that time to move one'. I was going to do studio shoots on Wednesday 14th October but my second model who's my neighbor in the halls of residence and does the same course as me was going to help me set up lighting as am not entirely sure how to work everything and i help out being a model for her portraits project but fell ill.

Feed back from my sketches is that they are very detailed documentary of my plans of shooting in studio but said I should place where am placing the lights in the sketch and what lights going to be used to be more organized. Partners liked how I have placed props into the scene that helps to tell my story more into detail and one of the partners said my sketches representing people with agoraphobia.

Agoraphobia meaning- is a fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult. Many people assume it simply means a fear of open spaces. They will avoid situations that cause anxiety and may only leave the house with a friend or partner. Many agoraphobics also fear being left alone, dislike being in any situation where they feel trapped and fear travelling away from their safe place usually home.

Plans for second shoot in studio

For second shot i l would like mix the woods with the look of a front room taking over by the woods as the front room and the woods can be people's comfort zones to have peace and let the book the take you somewhere as the moto i found saying 'books can take you anywhere'. Books can be a big thing in people's lives as they can influence people to work harder, lift up their sorrows and confidence in themselve's and understand more about the world and people around them. Book can flash back memories if you reading the right book as pages could reflect childhood or accomplishment in life. I like to include home problems to my images such as bills being high and not enough spare money to treat themselve's on a holiday to hide away from increasing crimes etc from where they were from or searching for a different place to settle peace.

Editorial Research

The term editorial means pictures for publication. Editorial photography can be found in magazines and newspapers that is not advertising. Editorial images illustrate and reflects the issues, themes and events in the world. Editorial images portray specific people, things and events that provide context for newspaper and magazine articles, blog posts, website and other non commercial presentations.

Editorial supports the printed words to a magazine or newspaper to go along to a story of the image. When I think of editorial photography I think it's advertising fashion in magazines but in fashion magazine they also publish still lifes.

Brief and Initial ideas

Brief

First Theme for second year of photography is around the 'extraordinary'. The title extraordinary was scary to hear and read as in my mind the images had to be mind blowing and unique which was difficult to come up with ideas and how to develop them and lead to doing studio experimenting then being printed off  professionally in time. Everyone within the group need to produce 5 images each in any style, size, type of paper and camera. when group have all printed off five final images, an external editor will professionally put together a magazine using each others best chosen pictures. This year going to be a challenge as we are all more indepent on how we want to represent our finals as last year we were given set guidelines on paper size and size of image and what camera and strict regime.

Adjective: very unusual or remarkable, beyond on what is ordinary or usual

extraordinary - Far more than usual or expected, " an extraordinary desire for approval"

Initial ideas

Class got told to not over think  as you can get lost in your ideas and lose confidence on how to do the image, get scared and run out of time to produce image and  best to keep the images simple. 

My first idea was about doing behind the scenes of girls getting ready for a night out but then thought i may get stressed out in looking for groups of models and idea could be a thing where you can only do so much on it.

Levitation- the process of rising or being raised in the air.

BOOKS CAN TAKE YOU ANYWHERE.

levitation- levitation can be a dream symbol of enlightenment, often associated with meditation. If you dream of levitating, could be a beneficial sign of your own spiritual state or connected to a dream of flying which indicated of freedom and empowerment to accomplish goals.

dreaming of levitation can signify that you are having difficulties of letting go of unconventional ideas. You need to be more realistic. Alternatively can be a way that you are distancing yourself from protection and rationality. It represents being alienated and uncared for and may not be feeling grounded or safe. you are feeling helpless and disconnected by those around you.

Levitation dream indicated you are trying to balance too many things in your life. It may literally mean that 'things up are up in the air'. you do not have a conclusion or decision about something.

The last image portrays for search for peace and quiet in an ever changing world dominated by technology in the form of tv,mobile phone, computer games and the internet. Also shows the difficulties of our age finding the simple pleasures of life sitting in the peace and quiet reading a novel of a company of a dog. The dog in the scene illustrates protection and true companionship in an unpredictable increase violent world. The facial expression on the model showing complete relaxation and miles away from stress and strains from life which life could be drifted away and replaced from a book.

This idea of model reading a book and floating in the air I was trying to show that she feels very distant on what is reality as shes too drawn into the book and leads to no control of her seeing whats really around but starts to see whats in the book come out to her world so basically my pieces becoming a fantasy land or day dreaming. Also the idea is that people in the world needs a time to themselves for peace to fix their thoughts and worries so they forget about others for a while till ready to face the problems deep inside.

When I had my first group Crit on friday 10th october i have printed these off on 10x15 gloss paper and feed back i got was that its a kinda like a memory of what they do as kids playing in the woods and the colours from the woods gives chills. I got told that next time i should lighten up the model more than the floating objects as people are gonna focus on them more than the person.
