Symbolism and meaning within still life


Skull- Symobolises death

Fruit- Represent the sweet and sour within life, which in paintings usually use a citrus fruit. Citrus fruits used to show how life can be,when fruit is ripe it is ready to eat but when it is over ripe it is rotting away and gone.

Flowers- Transience of life. They depict in paintings the expensive object as a reminder that life is temporary and moral considerations deserved more attention than material things.

Timepieces-   Clock and watches are used to signify the passing of time, time is limited, therefore use it wisely, reminds people of their own mortality. Symbol of the temporary nature of our lives and how fragile it can be

Abundance of food-  Represent wealth and a luxurious life, fruit and flowers don't last forever just like a life won't

Wine and Goblets-  Represent material pleasure and belongings, also show wealth and luxury

Mirror- A clear symbol of the vanity that should be avoided.

Books- Human Knowledge and its temporary nature
